Tracking Session Mix

When beginning the mix for this song, I tried to keep in mind the fact that it is a more mellow song with a slower tempo, and tried to make the tone of the song fit that idea.

Starting with the drums, all of the drums got EQ’d pretty heavily. I scooped a good amount of mids out of the kick, and some from the snare. I boosted the low frequencies of the kick on the kick in track, and boosted the beater sound on the kick out. For the snare, I boosted 200Hz for the body and around 2kHz for the crack. Both the kick and snare had 2 tracks, so each of them got their own bus to mix the tracks together. Both drums were compressed a bit on the individual tracks, and then the more heavy compression was done on the busses. Also, the snare and the toms were sent to a gated reverb that was very bright.

The bass guitar EQ boosted the low frequencies slightly and boosted some mids (to give it some “bass treble”), as well as compressed it heavily. For the 2 guitars, I panned them left and right. I split the “lead” guitar (which plays both lead sections and rhythm) into two tracks for lead and rhythm. The lead track is panned less to the left than its rhythm split.
